About
Design engineering explores the relationship between structure, creativity, and the evolving nature of design. Robert engages with the cyclical process of problem-solving, where design is not a linear path but a conversation - an iterative dialogue that adapts to new challenges, insights and discoveries.
At its core, Robert's approach in Design Engineering is grounded in understanding: understanding the context of a problem, the needs of a users, the limitations of existing solutions. This process can involve researching into product markets, competitors, end-users, the product itself. It is followed by the ideation stage, where through tools like mind-mapping, mood-boarding, design protocols and preliminary sketches ideas are translated into tangible forms. Through CAD modeling, digital and physical mockups and photorealistic visualizations, Product Design bridges the gap between abstract concepts and real-world applications.
His work spans multiple disciplines, from product and system design to packaging and graphic design which allowed him to have experience with a variety of digital design tools, leveraging 3D design software like Rhinoceros, Inventor, Fusion360, and Blender alongside graphic design platforms (the Affinity suite of tools) to create cohesive and functional solutions.
Central to Robert's design philosophy is the belief that design systems can drive efficiency and innovation. Computational and -by extension parametric and algorithmic- design can enable workflows that minimize inefficiencies and allow iterative development at scale. His university dissertation, which explored these themes, reflects his ongoing interest in algorithmic methodologies as tools for discovery and refinement.
Throughout his university years and subsequent professional projects, Robert has recognized that effective design extends beyond the end product. The most successful solutions, according to many Product Design Engineers, result from a thoughtful synthesis of structured problem-solving and hands-on experimentation. Such an approach—rooted in continuous exploration and refinement— and by remaining open to new insights and emerging technologies turns challenges into practical outcomes that highlight the synergy of engineering, design, and algorithmic thinking.
